Taiz:The National Commission for Human Rights has strongly condemned an attack by Saudi aircraft on Al-Rawd School in the Al-Rabie'i area of Al-Ta'iziyah District, Taiz Governorate. This marks the third consecutive targeting of the school, resulting in the complete destruction of its remaining structure.
According to Yemen News Agency, the Commission's statement denounced the repeated bombings as evidence of a deliberate policy to target education, not mere military errors. The statement suggests that attacking a school three times demonstrates an intent to deny the children of Taiz their right to life and education.
The Commission's statement also described the incident as part of a broader systematic campaign over the last 12 years, during which more than 2,775 educational facilities across 22 governorates have been destroyed. This includes over 459 schools and education offices. Additionally, more than 1,577 schools have been partially destroyed, and over 774 schools have closed due to targeting and fear.
The statement highlighted that since September 3, 2026, there has been an increase in the deliberate targeting of schools and telecommunications towers by Saudi forces, as a collective punishment against the Yemeni people. It emphasized that these actions violate Article 52 of Additional Protocol I to the Geneva Conventions, which protects schools as civilian objects, and constitute a war crime under Article 8(2)(b)(9) of the Rome Statute. The attacks also breach the Convention on the Rights of the Child and Article 26 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which recognizes education as a fundamental right.
The Commission holds the Saudi regime fully responsible for these actions and has called on UNICEF and UNESCO to condemn the destruction of educational facilities.
