Al-Mahwit:The General Authority for the Development of Small and Micro Enterprises, in collaboration with the Hufash Multipurpose Agricultural Cooperative Society, has initiated a project to support the completion of rainwater harvesting tanks. This initiative is designed to be facilitated through an interest-free loan scheme.
According to Yemen News Agency, the project targets the completion of 18 rainwater harvesting tanks across various sub-districts in the Hufash district. It is a part of broader efforts aimed at enhancing community-driven development initiatives, expanding rainwater harvesting capabilities, meeting local water demands, and promoting agricultural activities.
Province Undersecretary Yahya Faraj emphasized the significance of this project in addressing water scarcity and supporting community initiatives. He highlighted the role of rainwater harvesting tanks in providing water for diverse uses, reclaiming agricultural land, and improving livelihoods in the targeted areas. He praised the efforts of the Authority, the cooperative society, and the local community in implementing the project, underscoring the necessity for coordinated efforts to support development initiatives and meet basic water needs.
Hufash District Director Amin Nasser Al-Qal'aba pointed out the critical importance of rainwater harvesting tanks in mountainous regions where water access is limited. These tanks are vital for collecting rainwater to meet residents' needs and support agricultural activities, thereby mitigating the impact of water scarcity on farmland and local communities.
Mohammed Al-Ansi, head of the Hufash Multipurpose Agricultural Cooperative Society, noted that the project builds upon existing community initiatives. He detailed local residents' contributions, such as preparing tank sites, sourcing stones, and completing construction work, which reflect strong community cooperation and commitment.
The Authority's role in providing cement through an interest-free loan scheme was highlighted as essential for completing the tanks. This support enhances the community's capability to sustain its initiatives and develop local rainwater harvesting infrastructure.
Ayman Al-Kebsi, director of public relations and media at the Authority, described the project as an effective partnership with the local community. By financing ongoing initiatives, the Authority allows beneficiaries to complete projects that align with their needs and resources. The 'white loan' scheme enables beneficiaries to receive support without financial burdens, with loans being repaid and recycled to assist other beneficiaries, ensuring sustainable financing for community development.
A joint team from the Authority and the cooperative society conducted field visits to tanks in the Bani Ahmad, Al-Malahnah, and Bani Ma'mun uzlahs of Hufash District to assess progress and funding use. Project Officer Hassan Al-Atani reported that the team evaluated work completed, reviewed beneficiaries' contributions, and identified remaining requirements, as well as the projects' impact on water availability and agricultural expansion.
