Sana'a: A personal ID card is no longer merely a document proving one's identity. It has become essential for accessing many basic services, making obtaining and renewing it a pressing necessity for every citizen. With rapid developments across all areas of life, the need for a valid ID card has become increasingly important, particularly as many financial, educational, and administrative services depend on it. A renewed card also facilitates the issuance of other official documents and helps prevent delays and obstacles for its holder.
According to Yemen News Agency, obtaining or renewing a personal ID card is therefore a responsibility for every citizen. Those who have not yet obtained the new card are urged to do so, while holders of expired cards should renew them before the grace period ends. In consideration of citizens' circumstances amid the country's exceptional conditions resulting from the aggression and blockade, the Civil Status and Civil Registry Authority in Sana'a has repeatedly extended the validity of expired ID cards, giving citizens additional time to renew them.
Despite previous extensions, the Authority announced a final three-month grace period beginning in early August. The period is intended to give citizens sufficient time to obtain the new card and avoid financial penalties. According to the Authority, expired personal ID cards will become legally invalid after the final grace period ends on November 3 and will no longer be accepted for any transaction or by any institution.
Government and private institutions will rely exclusively on the new personal ID card for official transactions and procedures, for accessing services, including at universities and other public and private entities. The Authority had announced on August 3 the extension of the validity of expired personal ID cards for three months, describing it as a final, non-renewable extension. It said the decision was issued at the direction of the Minister of Interior, following requests from the Central Bank of Yemen, the Ministry of Civil Service, Administrative Development, and in consideration of the circumstances facing Yemeni citizens.
The Authority urged all citizens to renew their expired cards without delay, noting that it had introduced technical and organizational measures to reduce overcrowding and speed up renewal procedures at its branches. A personal ID card serves as proof of identity and is essential for citizens to access services from various institutions efficiently. It also establishes citizens' rights and obligations within society, making its issuance and renewal important for keeping personal records current.
Renewal also allows holders to update their personal information and obtain a recent digital photograph, helping prevent difficulties in daily transactions, particularly financial ones. As facial features naturally change over the years, an outdated photograph may make identity verification more difficult, whether through automated systems, such as self-verification for opening electronic wallets and conducting remote financial transactions, or through in-person checks by banking personnel and officials at government and private institutions.
In addition, renewing the card helps protect the holder's transactions, while updating civil registry records enhances transaction security and helps prevent legal or administrative complications arising from the use of expired documents.
