Sana'a: The Bachelor's Program in Prosthetics and Orthotics at the Faculty of Applied Medical Sciences, Sana'a University, has received international accreditation from the International Society for Prosthetics and Orthotics (ISPO).
According to Yemen News Agency, the program received international accreditation under Category I (CAT I), marking a significant academic and professional achievement that reflects Sana'a University's commitment to quality standards and continuous development in applied medical education programs. The accreditation followed a comprehensive six-month evaluation process that included a review of the curriculum and learning outcomes, faculty qualifications, practical and clinical training, quality assurance systems, and continuous improvement mechanisms. The process confirmed that the program meets international academic and professional standards.
Sana'a University President Dr. Mohammed Al-Bukhaiti congratulated the Faculty of Applied Medical Sciences, its dean and vice deans, administrative and academic staff, and students on the achievement in a statement to the Yemeni News Agency (Saba). He described the program's Category I international accreditation as a valuable addition to the university's academic and professional record, noting that it reflects the efforts made by the faculty and program staff to enhance the quality of education and training and adhere to international academic and professional standards. Dr. Al-Bukhaiti praised the efforts that contributed to achieving the accreditation and affirmed the university's continued support for developing its academic programs, strengthening their competitiveness, and improving their outcomes to meet the needs of society.
For his part, Dean of the Faculty of Applied Medical Sciences Dr. Khaled Al-Khamisi said that the international accreditation of the Bachelor's Program in Prosthetics and Orthotics by ISPO represents a major academic and professional achievement and a pivotal step in advancing applied medical education in Yemen. He noted that the accreditation came after a comprehensive six-month evaluation covering the curriculum and learning outcomes, faculty qualifications, practical and clinical training, as well as quality assurance and continuous improvement systems. He stressed that meeting these standards demonstrates the faculty's commitment to preparing national professionals in line with the latest international professional requirements.
Dr. Al-Khamisi said that only a limited number of programs have obtained this level of international accreditation, giving the achievement significance beyond the university, particularly given the pressing local need for specialists in this field. He emphasized the importance of investing in national capacity-building in prosthetics and orthotics. 'The beneficiaries of services in this field include amputees, people with physical disabilities, and children with congenital deformities,' he said, stressing that the service is not limited to the manufacture and fitting of prostheses and orthoses, but also encompasses assessment, training, and follow-up as part of an integrated rehabilitation team.
Al-Khamisi explained that the achievement was made possible through the continued support of the university presidency, the efforts of faculty members and students, and fruitful cooperation with partners, foremost among them the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), which contributed to supporting infrastructure, establishing facilities, developing education and training through its specialized experts. He reaffirmed that the accreditation marks the beginning of a new phase, with the faculty continuing its efforts to develop curricula, strengthen scientific research, and expand academic and professional partnerships to ensure sustainable quality and create broader opportunities for graduates. These efforts, he said, will contribute positively to improving the quality of life of people with disabilities and promoting their integration into society.
