Hodeida: As part of humanitarian interventions that integrate judicial efforts with social support, the General Authority for Zakat provided 350 million riyals from the fund designated for insolvent debtors. This contribution aims to settle the outstanding financial obligations of a number of insolvent prisoners in Hodeida Governorate, paving the way for their release in coordination with the judicial authorities.
According to Yemen News Agency, this coincided with an intensive field visit by the Committee for Addressing Prisons and Prisoners' Issues and relevant authorities to monitor the release of 1,148 prisoners from the governorate's prisons on the occasion of Eid al-Adha, in implementation of the directives of the revolutionary and political leadership.
The release includes prisoners who have served three-quarters of their sentences for serious crimes and half their sentences for less serious crimes, in addition to those covered by the general amnesty and insolvent debtors convicted in private rights cases who have served their legal terms. This contributes to settling complex cases and reintegrating the released prisoners into society.
In a statement to the Yemeni News Agency (Saba), Hodeida Governor Abdullah Atifi praised the humanitarian role played by the General Authority for Zakat in caring for insolvent prisoners and supporting the committee's efforts, stressing that these initiatives reflect the values of solidarity and compassion and embody the revolutionary and political leadership's concern for the most vulnerable groups. He noted that the Zakat Authority's contribution would have a significant impact on addressing the situations of a number of prisoners and enabling them to return to their families before Eid al-Adha. He commended the efforts of the Authority's leadership, its office in the governorate, and the philanthropists who supported such humanitarian work.
During the field visit, the Head of the Governorate's Appeals Prosecution, Judge Amin al-Qarni, the Head of the Prisons Cases Committee, Sheikh Ali Qarsha, and the Deputy Prosecutor for Prisons, Judge Walid Yaghnam, emphasized the profound and tangible impact of this financial support in facilitating the release of prisoners and bringing joy to their families with the arrival of Eid.
For his part, the Acting Deputy Head of the Awareness and Communication Sector at the General Authority for Zakat, Judge Hafiz Allah Zayed, stated that the Authority's contribution would be disbursed to insolvent debtors who meet the Sharia-compliant eligibility criteria for Zakat funds.
The General Authority for Zakat allocated the funds within the category of insolvent debtors to settle the outstanding financial obligations of a number of insolvent prisoners convicted in private rights cases, thus contributing to the completion of their release procedures and their return to their families before the blessed Eid al-Adha. The director of the Zakat Authority's office in the governorate, Mohammed Hazza, explained that this contribution reflects the legitimate uses of Zakat funds and embodies the Authority's humanitarian responsibility towards impoverished prisoners, especially with the approach of Eid al-Adha.
He noted that the Authority was keen to actively contribute to improving the conditions of prisoners through coordination with the Committee for Addressing Prisons and Prisoners' Issues, the Public Prosecution, and other relevant authorities. This coordination ensures that aid reaches those who deserve it and leads to the release of as many impoverished prisoners as possible.
Meanwhile, the deputy director of the Authority's office, Hamid Al-Azzi, affirmed the continuation of humanitarian programs and projects aimed at alleviating the suffering of the needy and vulnerable groups, particularly impoverished prisoners and their families, thereby strengthening the values of solidarity and compassion within the community.
