Amran:The Amran Water Basin Committee, led by Governor Dr. Faisal Jamaan, convened on Monday to discuss the water situation in the basin surrounding Amran city and neighboring districts.
According to Yemen News Agency, the meeting reviewed the challenges confronting water resources due to increasing unregulated well drilling and the depletion of groundwater reserves, which pose significant risks to water security in the basin and the governorate.
During the meeting, the committee examined 21 applications for licenses to drill new water wells. Some applications were approved after confirming compliance with technical requirements under the Water Law and relevant regulations, while others were rejected based on technical assessments and the necessity to protect groundwater reserves.
Illegal well drilling, particularly in the districts of Kharif, Raydah, Amran, and Jabal Yazid, was also discussed. The committee called for stronger oversight and regulation of drilling activities.
Urgent measures were approved to address the water situation in Qa'a Al-Bawn. These include projects to harvest rainwater and floodwater through water barriers and terraces to recharge groundwater and reduce water loss.
Additionally, the committee decided to ban tanker trucks from filling water from wells in the Raydah district for qat irrigation, as it contributes to the depletion of water resources.
Governor Jamaan emphasized the importance of enforcing water laws, strengthening oversight of well drilling, and preventing unregulated drilling. He also advocated for sustainable solutions, including water-harvesting projects and measures to protect the Amran water basin and its groundwater reserves.
