Taiz: The Committee for Addressing Prison and Prisoner Cases, assigned by the Revolution Leader and the President of the Supreme Political Council, has approved the release of 437 prisoners in Taiz Governorate. The beneficiaries include indigent inmates and detainees held on private rights cases. The releases were financed by the head of the committee, Sheikh Ali Nasser Qirsha, as part of ongoing efforts to address prisoners' conditions and expedite case resolution in accordance with the law.
According to Yemen News Agency, during field visits to the Central Prison, the Remand Correctional Facility, and several detention centers across the governorate, the committee carried out 891 judicial procedures. These included completing procedures for 279 case files, following up on 449 complaints and requests before courts, issuing 122 directives to expedite action, and resolving 12 additional cases. These measures aim to settle stalled cases and reduce periods of pretrial detention.
The Public Prosecution in the governorate also released more than 100 prisoners today as a first phase of those covered by the release decisions. The release process was attended by Acting Governor of Taiz Ahmed Amin Al-Masawa, Member of Parliament Mohammed Al-Junaid, Assistant Commander of the Fourth Military Region Brigadier General Noor Al-Din Al-Marani, the committee chairman's representative Ahmed Ali Qirsha, along with committee members, relevant prosecutors, and local officials. The remaining eligible prisoners will be released successively upon completion of legal procedures.
During the release process, Taiz Chief Prosecutor Judge Abdullah Al-Sanea stated that these measures reflect the revolutionary political leadership's concern for prisoners' conditions and their commitment to achieving justice and fairness without compromising the rights of others, thereby reinforcing the rule of law and ensuring its fair implementation.
Al-Sanea explained that the releases were carried out under various legal frameworks, including release on legal guarantees, release with exemption from the remainder of the sentence on health and humanitarian grounds, as well as other legal mechanisms depending on the nature of each case and applicable regulations.
For his part, committee member Judge Rajeh Saad Al-Din clarified that the total releases included 90 exemptions, 323 releases on guarantee, and 24 releases under other legal forms, bringing the total to 437 prisoners. He added that after meeting with more than 1,200 prisoners, the committee directed relevant authorities to expedite procedures, address stalled cases, return files requiring completion, and maintain direct follow-up with the competent prosecution offices to prevent prolonged detention without legal justification.
Meanwhile, the committee's head in the governorate, Majed Al-Kahlani, stated that these releases mark the second phase launched by the committee in Taiz following a thorough field review of prisoners' files. He noted that the total number of releases since the committee began its work in the governorate has reached 860 prisoners, including 215 releases on the occasion of the Prophet's Birthday, followed by 211 releases during the recent period. He affirmed that the committee will continue its field activities to address prisoners' conditions.
Al-Kahlani also called on business leaders and affluent individuals to contribute to alleviating prisoners' hardships and enabling them to return to their families. He emphasized that these steps are part of an ongoing program to inspect prisons, review prisoners' files, and address the cases of indigent inmates, in implementation of the Revolution Leader directives and the President of the Supreme Political Council, in a manner that promotes justice and social stability.
