Athletes Begin Trials for 2026 Asian Indoor Games Participation

Sanaa:Trials began on Sunday for Yemeni athletes nominated to compete in the Asian Indoor Games, which are scheduled to take place from December 11 to 21. Yemen will participate through its Olympic Committee in eight sports taekwondo, karate, judo, weightlifting, boxing, wrestling, billiards, and chess.

According to Yemen News Agency, the first phase of these trials, focusing on general physical fitness, is being conducted in Sanaa, Aden, Seiyun, and Hodeidah for athletes in six sports taekwondo, karate, judo, weightlifting, boxing, and wrestling. Initial physical fitness and endurance tests were administered today, with further assessments planned for Wednesday.

In Sana'a, the trials took place at Al-Merisi Stadium in the Sports City, attended by members of the Yemeni Olympic Committee, including Technical Director Jamal Al-Jabali, and various coaches and department members. Additional tests were held at Jawas Stadium in Seiyun and the Shabab Al-Jeel Club stadium in Hodeidah.

The selection process is overseen by the Olympic Committee's External Participation Approval Committee, which includes academics and specialists. This committee is responsible for identifying the best candidates nominated by the sports federations to represent Yemen internationally.

Before the trials commenced, Jamal Al-Jabali detailed the testing plan, indicating that athletes who pass the initial phase will proceed to sport-specific trials in the second phase. Successful candidates from both phases will then undergo medical examinations in the third and final phase. Al-Jabali encouraged the athletes to perform their best at each stage to earn the opportunity to represent Yemen, highlighting the committee's decision to form a selection panel as instrumental in identifying the strongest athletes.

The second phase of sport-specific tests is scheduled for October 25-26 at the sports federations' halls, while the final phase, involving medical examinations, will take place on October 26-27 at sports medicine centers in Sanaa, Aden, Hodeidah, and Seiyun.
