Deputy Foreign Minister Engages with UN Envoy’s Office on Cooperation and Concerns

Sana'a: Deputy Foreign Minister Abdulwahid Abu Ras engaged in a discussion with Mohammed al-Ghannam, Director of the Office of the UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy to Yemen, focusing on potential areas of collaboration between the Ministry and the Office. The conversation centered around recent tensions involving UN staff members and the broader implications for international relations.

According to Yemen News Agency, the Deputy Foreign Minister voiced his disapproval of both the Security Council's press statement and the remarks attributed to the UN Secretary-General concerning the detention of UN staff on espionage suspicions. He emphasized that the issue is being addressed according to the nation's laws and judicial procedures, which aim to safeguard national security and sovereignty.

Abu Ras highlighted that external pressure would not alter Sana'a's stance but could potentially strain relations with the United Nations and hinder efforts to restore trust in the international body. He commended the Office of the Special Envoy for its pivotal role in the successful prisoner exchange agreement and reaffirmed Sana'a's dedication to implementing the agreement and supporting its success.

Furthermore, Abu Ras underscored the necessity for the UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy to Yemen to actively participate in the peace process by taking concrete steps to foster trust and create an environment conducive to achieving lasting peace, thereby alleviating the prolonged suffering of the Yemeni people.

Meanwhile, Mohammed al-Ghannam, representing the UN Envoy's Office, reaffirmed their commitment to pursuing peace initiatives in Yemen, signifying continued international efforts to bring an end to the conflict.
