Taiz:The National Human Rights Commission and its Taiz branch have strongly condemned a deadly airstrike by Saudi forces on a crowded market in the Al-Wazi'iyah district of Taiz Governorate. The attack resulted in numerous casualties, including both fatalities and injuries among civilians.
According to Yemen News Agency, the Commission and its Taiz branch stated that the airstrike was carried out during peak hours when the market was bustling with vendors and shoppers, including women, children, and the elderly. This deliberate timing turned the market into a scene of devastation, with blood, human remains, and destruction scattered throughout.
The joint statement from the Commission questioned the motives behind targeting a civilian market, emphasizing that the attack represents a war crime and a crime against humanity. It violates international legal frameworks, including the Geneva Conventions and the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court, by targeting civilians and non-military sites.
The statement also highlighted that the attack was part of a broader, systematic aggression against the people of Taiz and Yemen by Saudi forces. The Human Rights Commission holds the Saudi regime fully accountable for the massacre, asserting that the incident, documented with evidence, will be pursued in international courts.
The Commission has called on the United Nations, the Human Rights Council, the Security Council, and international humanitarian organizations to condemn the attack and end their silence, which it claims has emboldened further violence against civilians. Additionally, it urged an end to weapon sales to Saudi Arabia and called for independent media and human rights organizations to report on the incident to raise global awareness of the atrocity.
