Human Rights Authority Condemns Saudi Airstrike on Taiz Market

Taiz:The National Human Rights Authority has strongly condemned a Saudi airstrike that targeted a grocery store in the crowded Al-Wazi'iyah market in Taiz province. The attack, which took place on Saturday, resulted in injuries to six civilians, including children, according to initial reports.

According to Yemen News Agency, the authority highlighted that the targeting of a grocery store in a public market constitutes a direct attack on a civilian object, which is protected under international humanitarian law. The authority cited Article 52 of Additional Protocol I to the Geneva Conventions and Article 8 of the Rome Statute as relevant legal frameworks that classify such actions as violations of international law.

The authority further described the targeting of markets and commercial shops as part of a policy of starvation and collective punishment aimed at disrupting economic life and depriving civilians of their livelihoods. It noted that this attack occurred less than 24 hours after other Saudi strikes in Al-Shamayateen, Maqbanah, Haifan, and Al-Mokha, which reportedly resulted in casualties among women and children.

The Saudi regime has been held fully criminally responsible by the authority, which has called on the United Nations and international organizations to condemn attacks on civilians in markets. Additionally, the authority's field teams in Taiz are documenting the incident, recording the names of the injured, and preparing a legal file to be included among war crimes that are not subject to a statute of limitations.
