Sana'a: The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Water Resources today launched the second phase of the Government Facilities Afforestation Project, as part of a strategic plan aimed at planting nearly one million seedlings across various governorates.
According to Yemen News Agency, Engineer Samir Al-Hanani, advisor to the ministry, stressed that the project, implemented in coordination with local authorities and agricultural sectors in the governorates, falls within a comprehensive national afforestation plan. He noted that during this second phase, 100,000 seedlings will be planted in the capital Sana'a - 50 percent fruit-bearing trees and 50 percent ornamental and forest trees. He affirmed that the program will expand in the coming years to cover free governorates.
Al-Hanani explained that the initiative seeks to instill awareness among future generations about the importance of fruit trees in achieving self-sufficiency, highlighting that its success depends on community participation alongside government efforts, contributing to building a productive and sustainable society.
At the launch ceremony, attended by the President of the Agricultural Cooperative Union, Mubarak Al-Qaili, the head of the agricultural sector in Sana'a, Mohammed Hajar, stated that the second phase began with direct support from the Ministry of Agriculture and the local authority. He added that the project does not only cover afforestation of government facilities, but also includes medians, islands, and public streets.
Hajar further revealed the launch of a competition among government facilities for excellence in planting fruit trees, aimed at promoting a culture of afforestation and production, and in line with the revolutionary leadership's vision of making Sana'a a 'productive green capital.'
