General

Sana'a: The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Water Resources announced the opening of the squid fishing season in the Red Sea, within the territorial waters of the Republic of Yemen, starting Saturday, 18 Safar 1448 AH, corresponding to August 1, 2026.

According to Yemen News Agency, the Ministry of Fisheries, in a statement received by the agency, explained that the opening of the fishing season is based on studies and technical recommendations aimed at regulating the exploitation of marine fisheries and preserving fish stocks.

The statement indicated that the decision to open the season prohibits fishing in estuaries and shallow areas. The General Authority for Marine Science and Aquatic Life Research has been tasked with conducting field visits to identify these areas and monitor the presence of juvenile squid in the fishing grounds throughout the season.

The decision also urged the General Authority for Fisheries in the Red Sea to apprehend violators and take legal action against them, in coordination with relevant authorities, to ensure compliance with fishing regulations.

The decision emphasized the preparation and implementation of an emergency plan for managing squid stocks. This plan will be developed jointly by the Marine Science and Fisheries Research Authority, under the supervision of the Undersecretary of the Sector, and in coordination with the local authority in Hodeidah Governorate and other relevant bodies.

The Ministry affirmed that this decision is part of its efforts to preserve squid stocks and enhance the sustainability of marine fisheries, thereby contributing to the protection of fish resources and ensuring continued production.
