Sanaa:Representatives from national milling companies and relevant authorities gathered as the Ministry of Economy, Industry, and Investment hosted a workshop emphasizing the importance of increasing flour extraction rates. The event, held under the slogan "The Whole Wheat Grain: Health and Sustainability," highlighted the strategic significance of this initiative.
According to Yemen News Agency, Acting Minister of Economy, Industry, and Investment Sam Al-Bashiri underscored the positive health and economic impacts of raising flour extraction rates. He celebrated the initial success of increasing the white flour extraction rate from 72% to 80% on August 1st, which was well-received by consumers. He also announced the second phase, which will raise the rate to 86% starting October 1st, and a third phase in 2027 aiming for 90%.
The workshop saw participation from Ministry of Economy Undersecretaries and other key figures, including Abdullah Al-Atifi from the Yemen Standardization and Metrology Organization. Mohammed Salah of the Capital Municipality Chamber of Commerce and Industry praised the Ministry's efforts and stressed the health and economic benefits of utilizing whole wheat grain.
Presentations during the workshop included a paper by Ibtisam Dael on the strategic transition toward increasing the wheat extraction rate, while Diaa Al-Hashar and Ahmed Al-Tayyar provided insights on health benefits and sustainability. Films titled "Whole Grain" and "The Harms of White Flour" were also screened.
The workshop concluded with recommendations for training bakery owners on using composite flour and forming committees to assist bakeries in technical transitions. Participants called for media campaigns to promote healthier dietary habits and stressed the importance of expanding local grain cultivation.
