Sana’a Destroys Four Tons of Expired Food

Sana'a: The Public Works Department in Hamdan district of Sana'a governorate on Sunday destroyed four tons of expired and unfit-for-human-consumption food. The destruction process was carried out according to established legal procedures, in the presence of relevant committees and representatives of concerned authorities.

According to Yemen News Agency, Engineer Abed Shaya, head of the Hamdan Public Works Department, explained that the destruction followed the confiscation of the food during routine and surprise inspection tours conducted by the Environmental Health Department at shops, warehouses, and wholesale and retail outlets in various areas of the district. These inspections were part of an intensive field campaign to monitor markets, commercial establishments, and food products.

He emphasized that consumer protection and ensuring food safety are a red line that cannot be compromised under any circumstances. Shaya clarified that these campaigns are not merely a routine procedure, but rather a strategic plan to rid markets of any adulterated or spoiled goods that threaten public health.

Shaya emphasized that the Public Works Department will not hesitate to impose legal penalties and refer violating establishments to the judicial authorities. For his part, Safwan Abdulmughni, Head of the Environmental Health Department at the Hamdan Public Works branch, explained that the confiscated quantities, which included canned goods, soft drinks, preserved foods, and other consumer goods, were identified and seized due to some merchants' failure to adhere to proper storage standards and the expiration of their stated expiration dates.

He noted that field inspection teams are working around the clock to ensure that all goods conform to approved specifications and standards.
