Taiz Rights Network Criticizes Prisoner Release and Alleged Use of Human Shields

Taiz:The Taiz Rights and Freedoms Network has condemned the release of over 1,200 prisoners, which included individuals accused of serious crimes such as murder, armed robbery, and terrorism. The network also denounced the alleged use of civilians as human shields by Saudi enemy forces in Taiz.

According to Yemen News Agency, the network's statement highlighted the documentation of prison breakouts involving more than 1,200 inmates, among them suspects in the assassination of Iftihan Al-Mashhari, the former director of Taiz's Cleaning and Improvement Fund.

The network accused the forces of rearming these escapees and involving them in hostile and criminal activities, which it claims exacerbates violations and heightens insecurity in the region.

Additionally, the network expressed concern about the detention of civilians and prisoners in conflict zones and targeted sites, where they reportedly face threats, abuses, and are allegedly used as human shields.

The network stated that the release and rearming of convicted criminals increase terrorism risks and endanger social peace. It further emphasized that using detainees as human shields constitutes a war crime under international humanitarian law.

The Taiz Rights and Freedoms Network held Saudi enemy forces and their allies accountable for the repercussions of these actions and the safety of detainees. It called on the United Nations, the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, and international organizations to denounce these violations and ensure accountability for those responsible.
