Washington: The US public debt surpassed $39 trillion for the first time in history on Thursday, according to data from the US Treasury Department. According to Yemen News Agency, statistics published by the department indicate that this figure reached more than $39.016 trillion on March 17, up from $38.992 trillion the previous day. The department noted that the US sovereign debt first exceeded $38 trillion on October 21 of last year. A report issued last February by the International Monetary Fund suggested that US public debt could reach 140% of GDP by 2031, a level considered dangerous for the global economy as a whole. Since the beginning of US President Donald Trump's second term, the US public debt has increased by more than $2.31 trillion. This increase occurred despite the administration's attempts to reduce government spending and increase revenues, including through the imposition of tariffs. According to estimates from the Congressional Budget Office, the federal government is increasing its debt at a rate exceeding $75,000 per second.
