Sana'a:The General Federation of Yemeni Workers' Trade Unions, in conjunction with the General Union of Workers in Construction, Contracting and Building Materials Manufacturing, has issued a strong condemnation following a Saudi-led attack on a cement factory located south of Hamdan District in Sana'a Governorate.
According to Yemen News Agency, the unions expressed their outrage over the assault on the civilian industrial facility, which resulted in the deaths and injuries of several workers and their family members, predominantly women and children. The attack also inflicted significant damage on the factory and its production infrastructure.
The unions emphasized that the targeting of a privately owned civilian industrial facility represents an attack on Yemen's economic and productive assets. They highlighted that this incident reflects the Saudi regime's ongoing efforts to undermine the national economy through a continuous economic war and blockade, exacerbating the hardships faced by citizens and workers.
The statement from the unions pointed out that the repercussions of the Saudi aggression extend beyond immediate casualties and material destruction. It poses threats to the industrial sector by disrupting production, endangering jobs and household incomes, and undermining the investment climate, which hampers efforts to bolster local production and achieve economic recovery.
The unions described attacks on civilian factories and economic facilities as grave violations of international humanitarian law, potentially constituting war crimes, especially when civilian objects are purposefully targeted. They called for accountability for those responsible for these actions.
Furthermore, the unions affirmed their commitment to documenting and pursuing legal channels to protect victims' rights and seek fair compensation for the human and material losses incurred by the industrial and investment sectors. They underscored that such aggression would not deter them from supporting the productive and industrial sectors, safeguarding investors' and producers' interests, and maintaining productive activities in collaboration with relevant authorities and the private sector.
The unions appealed to the United Nations, international human rights and labor organizations, global labor bodies, and economic and industrial federations worldwide to denounce the targeting of civilian economic facilities in Yemen. They urged these organizations to fulfill their legal and humanitarian duties by protecting workers and civilian infrastructure, preventing further attacks, and ensuring accountability for those responsible.
In conclusion, the unions stressed that protecting industrial and investment facilities and safeguarding the assets of the national economy is a national responsibility. They stated that any attack on factories and production facilities is a direct assault on the Yemeni people's rights to work, development, and a dignified life.
