Agriculture & Fisheries Ministry Initiates Export of Surplus Potato Production

Sanaa: The Agricultural Marketing Sector at the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources has commenced, in coordination with relevant authorities, the procedures for exporting surplus local potato production. This initiative is aimed at supporting farmers and achieving balance in the local market.

According to Yemen News Agency, Mohsen Atif, the Undersecretary of the Ministry for the Agricultural Marketing Sector, stated that the decision to export the surplus follows an abundant potato production season. This abundance has been achieved after reaching self-sufficiency in potato seeds, leading to increased production and a surplus available for external markets.

Atif emphasized that exporting the surplus will help stabilize supply and demand in local markets, thereby preventing price declines due to excess supply. This is expected to positively impact farmers by improving their economic returns, enhancing market stability, and supporting sustainable production practices.

He highlighted that the current potato production surplus presents a significant investment opportunity for the private sector to expand agro-processing industries related to this crop. This expansion could absorb part of the surplus production and increase the added value of local products.

Atif pointed out that potato processing industries, such as frozen potato production and its derivatives, are economically viable projects. These industries have relatively lower investment requirements compared to others and offer promising opportunities for both local marketing and export.

The Undersecretary urged exporters, businessmen, and investors to capitalize on the investment opportunities in agro-processing industries. This move is expected to enhance economic development, create new job opportunities, and support efforts to develop the agricultural sector, maximizing the utilization of local products.
