Consumer Prices Surge in Gaza Strip Amid Overall Inflation in Palestine

Baku:Gaza Strip Consumer prices in Palestine saw a significant rise in September 2026, as reported by the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics. The Consumer Price Index (CPI) increased by 4.69% compared to August 2026, with the Gaza Strip experiencing the most substantial hike.

According to Yemen News Agency, the Gaza Strip recorded an 11.36% increase in its CPI, highlighting the growing cost-of-living challenges for its residents. This rise contributed significantly to the overall increase in consumer prices across Palestinian regions.

The surge in prices was primarily driven by imported cigarettes, which soared by 28.95%, and white wheat flour, which rose by 11.96%. Other notable increases included fresh vegetables at 8.57%, education services at 2.97%, road passenger transport services at 2.79%, and eggs at 1.24%.

Year-on-year comparisons show a different trend, with the CPI in Palestine dropping by 25.18% from September 2025 to September 2026. This decrease was mainly due to a 46.43% fall in the Gaza Strip, while the West Bank and Quds saw increases of 3.34% and 2.83%, respectively.

In the West Bank, the CPI rose by 0.53% in September 2026 compared to the previous month. This was attributed to price hikes in fresh vegetables (18.61%), eggs (12.19%), and potatoes (7.92%). Key commodities like vine tomatoes, green hot peppers, and local cucumbers reached 7 shekels per kilogram.

Meanwhile, Quds saw a 0.44% increase in its CPI for the same period, driven by dried vegetables, fresh fruit, and fresh vegetables. The prices of key goods such as dry onions, oranges, and avocados also rose, reflecting the broader trend of inflation across different regions in Palestine.
