Sanaa:The National Committee for Prisoners' Affairs announced the release of 159 detainees who surrendered voluntarily without engaging in combat during recent events. This action aligns with the general amnesty issued by Mahdi al-Mashat, President of the Supreme Political Council, on September 10, 2026.
According to Yemen News Agency, the announcement was made during a press conference attended by various officials, including the Minister of Transport and Public Works, Mohammed Qahim; the Governor of Abyan, Saleh al-Junaidi; members of the Shura Council; and the Head of the International Committee of the Red Cross delegation in Sanaa. Abdulqader al-Murtada, head of the committee, noted that this release is the second group freed under the amnesty, following the release of 323 individuals on September 15 in Al-Hudaydah Governorate.
Al-Murtada emphasized that the general amnesty is an active policy rather than a symbolic gesture, urging those still engaged on the enemy's side to take advantage of the opportunity to surrender. He highlighted the state's commitment to national reconciliation and preventing further bloodshed, reinforcing that the amnesty will not remain open indefinitely.
The release of detainees underlines the state's efforts to heal the wounds inflicted by the Saudi-led aggression in Yemen. Al-Murtada reassured the families of those still detained that efforts to secure their release are ongoing, with the political leadership and state institutions working toward this goal. The committee maintains leverage in negotiations due to the large number of enemy captives it holds, including high-ranking commanders, which it plans to use in future prisoner exchanges.
