Head of General Authority for Antiquities & Museums Inspects Archaeological Sites in Dhamar & Ibb

Dhamar: The Head of the General Authority for Antiquities and Museums, Abbad al-Heyal, inspected on Monday the archaeological sites of the ancient city of Baynun, Al-Hatma, and Masna'at Mariyah in Dhamar Governorate.

According to Yemen News Agency, Al-Heyal reviewed the challenges facing these sites, most notably encroachments, illegal excavations, and acts of vandalism, as well as the needs of the authority's branch in the governorate and the importance of enhancing coordination with local authorities and relevant security agencies. He listened to specialists at these sites, who briefed him on their current conditions, the level of preservation, the extent of damage, and violations some sites have been subjected to, along with the difficulties hindering protection and maintenance efforts.

During his visit to Masna'at Mariyah, the head of the authority inspected a number of archaeological features and recently discovered inscriptions. He directed the preparation of a technical study to carry out limited exploratory excavations and to rehabilitate the site for visitation, in order to help preserve it and highlight its historical value. Al-Heyal also discussed with Deputy Governor of Dhamar, Ahmed al-Dawran, issues related to supporting the authority's branch, rehabilitating the museum, strengthening protection of archaeological sites, paving the road leading to the tunnel and museum of Baynun, and establishing a security post at Masna'at Mariyah.

He further met with employees of the authority's branch in the governorate, stressing the importance of activating scientific research and academic publishing in the field of archaeology and cultural heritage, while reviewing ongoing efforts to develop institutional work and enhance the protection of Yemen's civilizational heritage.

In addition, the Head of the General Authority for Antiquities and Museums, Abbad al-Heyal, accompanied by the Director of the Authority's branch in Ibb Governorate, Mohammed al-Anani, inspected archaeological sites that had been subjected to excavation and vandalism in the areas of Hiddah Gholais, Al-Asabi, and Al-Usaybah. He also reviewed work at the Dhamar Museum, its development needs, and efforts to strengthen its role in preserving and displaying cultural and archaeological heritage, as well as ongoing restoration works at the Great Mosque in Ibb city, including the eastern and southern arcades.

Al-Heyal emphasized the importance of continuing work at a high pace in accordance with approved technical standards. He also reviewed the damage caused to the Ibb Museum building due to rainfall, and directed the preparation of necessary assessments to address the damage and preserve the building and its contents.
