Saudi Airstrikes in Taiz Result in Civilian Casualties

Taiz:The National Human Rights Authority and its branch in Taiz Governorate have condemned airstrikes carried out by Saudi aircraft that targeted civilian homes in the Hamir Al-Jabal area of Maqbana District. These attacks involved four airstrikes and resulted in significant casualties among the local population.

According to Yemen News Agency, the initial toll from the strikes reports nine civilians killed, including women and children, while 16 others have sustained various injuries. Many people remain trapped under debris, with rescue efforts hindered by the extensive destruction.

The Authority's statement labeled the deliberate targeting of densely populated civilian areas as a war crime and a crime against humanity, citing violations of international humanitarian law and the Rome Statute's Articles 8/2/b/1 and 2. It emphasized the systematic nature of the attacks indicated an intent to maximize casualties.

Responsibility for the attack has been placed squarely on Saudi forces, with the Human Rights Authority also attributing moral and legal accountability to the international community, including the United Nations and the Security Council, for their inaction.

The statement urged the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and UNICEF to denounce the attacks on women and children in Maqbana. It further called upon local and international human rights organizations to join in condemning the incident.

Finally, the Human Rights Authority reiterated its demand for the prosecution of Saudi leaders as war criminals before the International Criminal Court.
