Hodeida: The agricultural and livestock sector in the Tihama plain of the Hodeida governorate has experienced a notable advancement, achieving record productivity indicators. These developments underscore the governorate's significance as a pivotal agricultural region, contributing to food security and self-sufficiency.
According to Yemen News Agency, the annual agricultural development achievement report from the General Tihama Development Authority for the year 1447 AH highlighted the vital role of both official and community efforts. These collective initiatives have been instrumental in implementing developmental programs and projects that aim to enhance agricultural and livestock production. The report emphasizes the successful development of plant and animal exports, rehabilitation of irrigation facilities, digital transformation, and the protection of environmental resources.
The report revealed that the Authority supervised the export of 177,416 tons of agricultural plant products to foreign and regional markets. Mangoes led the list of exports, followed by watermelons, red sorghum, and other crops. In the livestock sector, 290,732 head of livestock were exported to Djibouti, with goats and sheep being the primary exports.
The annual report also detailed the implementation of strategic projects aimed at rehabilitating irrigation facilities and maximizing the use of torrent waters for agricultural purposes. In Wadi Moor, the Fath Al-Rahman canal project commenced, aimed at irrigating 4,500 hectares of land, benefiting 5,000 farmers. Additional projects are underway in various regions like Wadi Zabid and Wadi Saham to enhance water resource utilization and expand irrigation facilities.
In collaboration with the International Committee of the Red Cross, the Authority conducted a National Veterinary Immunization Campaign, targeting 1,354,727 head of livestock. This initiative benefited over 38,000 families and aimed to protect livestock from diseases. Furthermore, 100 agricultural field schools were established to train farmers, and local beehives were distributed to support honey production.
The report highlighted the Authority's progress in digital transformation, with significant strides made in automating work processes and enhancing institutional performance. Emphasis was also placed on clean energy initiatives, including the establishment of a solar energy system to improve service levels.
The Director General of the Authority, Engineer Fawaz Al-Adhri, expressed that the reported achievements reflect the development seen in Tihama's agricultural and livestock sectors. Al-Adhri emphasized the importance of utilizing water resources, protecting livestock, and enhancing farmers' capacities as part of the Authority's strategic priorities.
Engineer Al-Adhri reiterated the significance of digital transformation in improving institutional performance and service levels. He acknowledged the efforts of the Tihama community and local societies in supporting agricultural development and reaffirmed the Authority's commitment to expanding strategic projects in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Water Resources, and local authorities.
