Turkish and Somali Forces Successfully Liberate Hijacked Vessel in Somalia

Mogadishu: Turkish navy and Somali armed forces have successfully liberated a hijacked vessel in Somali waters, eliminating 14 alleged pirates in a battle that extended over several days, according to Somalia's government. The operation, which resulted in the freeing of the MV LUTUF, a Cameroon-flagged vessel, marks a significant achievement in the ongoing fight against piracy in the region. According to Deutsche Welle, the Somali Defense Ministry reported that the 10-day operation involved the destruction of four boats utilized by the pirates. The sustained military pressure compelled the remaining pirates to abandon the ship, allowing the forces to secure the MV LUTUF, which has since resumed its journey. Although the ministry did not disclose specific details regarding casualties or the condition of the crew, it confirmed that the ship was now safe. The MV LUTUF was seized on August 17 off the coast of the Nugaal region in Puntland state. This joint operation between Turkey and Somalia was part of a defe nse cooperation agreement aimed at combating piracy in the region. The vessel's crew included at least eight members, among them one Turkish national. The Horn of Africa has experienced a resurgence in piracy since April, according to figures from the International Maritime Organization. This year alone, there have been at least 15 attacks off the coast of Somalia, with five cargo ships taken hostage. The most recent incident involved a vessel seized on August 20 off Yemen. These attacks represent the highest number since 2013, reminiscent of the piracy peak in 2011 before international naval interventions significantly reduced the threat. The resurgence of piracy poses increasing challenges for international shipping in the Middle East. Vessels are already navigating the contested Strait of Hormuz and striving to avoid Houthi attacks in the Red Sea. Moreover, pirate attacks have also been on the rise along the West African coast, adding another layer of concern for commercial shipping.
