Capital Secretariat Discusses Mechanism to Address Homelessness & Improve Urban & Humanitarian Environment

Sana'a: A meeting was held on Thursday at the Sana'a Secretariat, chaired by the Head of the Social Affairs Committee of the Local Council, Hamoud Al-Naqeeb, and attended by leaders of the National Center for the Care and Shelter of Homeless Unaccompanied Mental Health Patients.

According to Yemen News Agency, the meeting, attended by Director of the Secretariat Social Affairs Office Nasser Al-Kahili, Deputy Director of the Public Works Office Eng. Khaled Abdulmoghni, Deputy Executive Director of the National Program Mohammed Al-Ghaili, Director General of the Center Dr. Omar Al-Khurasani, and Technical Director Abdulwadoud Al-Ghaili, focused on discussing mechanisms for coordination and joint cooperation to address homelessness.

Participants reviewed ways to strengthen institutional partnership between the two sides to develop solutions to a key humanitarian and social issue and to improve the urban and humanitarian environment in the capital.

The meeting also reviewed the National Program's field efforts to identify and collect homeless mental health patients from streets, neighborhoods, and public markets, provide them with shelter, and deliver healthcare, psychological, and social services, helping ease pressure on the Secretariat.

Attendees stressed the importance of continued cooperation between the Sana'a Secretariat and the National Program in caring for, sheltering, and rehabilitating homeless mental health patients, as well as supporting field campaigns aimed at sheltering homeless individuals from streets and public places to enhance community security and stability.

The meeting approved the issuance of permits and licenses for kiosks and small businesses for rehabilitated beneficiaries of the program to facilitate their social reintegration, economic empowerment, and livelihood stability. Relevant authorities were also directed not to obstruct beneficiaries while conducting their licensed activities and to take into consideration their health, psychological, and social conditions.

It was further agreed to study the possibility of the municipality contributing to the implementation of service and infrastructure projects related to the program. Representatives from both sides were assigned to coordinate efforts, follow up on the implementation of agreed measures, address challenges, and provide institutional and community support for the program's projects and activities to ensure the sustainability of its services and expand the number of beneficiaries.

The meeting concluded with an affirmation of all parties' commitment to continued cooperation and coordination in support of public interest and to strengthen humanitarian and national efforts aimed at caring for, rehabilitating, and reintegrating homeless mental health patients into society.
