China’s Marine Economy Achieves 4.9% Growth in First Three Quarters

Beijing:China's marine economy experienced a 4.9 percent growth during the first nine months of this year, reaching a total output of 8.5 trillion yuan, equivalent to approximately 1.27 trillion US dollars. This increase was bolstered by the growth in marine production and the expansion of both traditional and emerging marine industries.

According to Yemen News Agency, official data from China's Ministry of Natural Resources, as reported by Xinhua News Agency, indicates that the marine economy has maintained stable growth, with improvements in its production structure and resilience against challenges. The data also highlights a growing momentum toward innovation and high-quality development.

China's offshore crude oil production saw a year-on-year rise of 3.5 percent, while marine aquatic products output increased by 4.6 percent during the same period. The shipbuilding sector noted significant growth, with new orders surging by 98.5 percent, completed orders up by 35 percent, and the order backlog expanding by 41.9 percent compared to the previous year. Moreover, coastal ports reported a 1.6 percent increase in cargo throughput and a 4.7 percent rise in container handling. In emerging marine industries, the value of new orders for marine engineering equipment surged by 123.3 percent year-on-year, capturing over 80 percent of the global market.

Additionally, the seawater desalination and resource utilization industry showed progress, with new desalination projects launched this year collectively capable of producing over 520,000 tons per day. The marine tourism sector also continued its steady growth.

Dai Bin, president of the China Tourism Academy, stated that marine tourism is marked by its experiential nature, high technological content, and strong connections to various industrial sectors. He emphasized the importance of creating a marine tourism corridor from southern to northern China during the 15th Five-Year Plan period (2026-2030) to foster new growth drivers for marine industries and support China's goal of becoming a global tourism powerhouse.
