Human Rights Commission Condemns Saudi Attacks on Yemeni Civilian Areas

Sana'a:The National Human Rights Commission has condemned the recent Saudi-led airstrikes targeting the Asr neighborhood in the capital and a cement factory in Hamdan district, Sana'a Governorate. These incidents have been described as dangerous escalations in the ongoing conflict.

According to Yemen News Agency, the commission reported that Saudi warplanes carried out two attacks, one on a civilian house in the densely populated Asr neighborhood, resulting in the deaths of four individuals and injuring several others, including women and children. The house was completely destroyed in the strike.

The commission also criticized the targeting of a cement factory in Hamdan, labeling the attack as part of a systematic effort to destroy economic infrastructure and negatively impact thousands of workers and their families. The strike reportedly caused multiple casualties.

The commission emphasized that the Asr neighborhood is a civilian area and not a battlefield, and described the airstrike on the house as a documented act of state terrorism. It further stated that the attack on the cement factory constitutes a war crime under Article 8 of the Rome Statute, which prohibits attacks on civilian targets. The factory supports over 2,000 Yemeni families, and its destruction poses a significant threat to their livelihoods.

The statement highlighted that these attacks occurred after 100 days of intensified aggression, during which more than 2,900 airstrikes were conducted, resulting in 562 deaths and injuries. The commission called for thorough documentation of these attacks and emphasized that each missile serves as evidence for potential proceedings before the International Criminal Court in The Hague.

Furthermore, the commission urged the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Trk, to address these issues publicly and called on organizations such as Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International to condemn the targeting of the civilian factory. It warned that ongoing silence from the UN could be interpreted as complicity in the attacks on Asr and Hamdan.
