Taiz:The General Authority for Marine Sciences and Aquatic Research has condemned a recent attack by Saudi aircraft that resulted in the deaths of eight fishermen off the coast of Al-Kadha in the Dhu Bab district, Taiz governorate. The attack targeted two traditional fishing boats, prompting the Authority to demand an investigation into what they describe as a "brutal massacre."
According to Yemen News Agency, the Authority's statement labeled the attack as part of a systematic campaign against the marine fishing sector, accusing the Saudi forces of committing a war crime. The statement highlighted that the attack violated international humanitarian law, the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, and international conventions meant to protect civilians.
The Authority further stated that the assault on fishermen seeking to provide for their families signifies a deliberate expansion of attacks on civilians and their livelihoods. It warned of the dire humanitarian and economic impacts of such actions, including terrorizing fishermen, destroying their boats, and depriving families of income and food sources.
Holding the Saudi forces responsible for the massacre, the Authority stressed the need for accountability for those involved in planning, executing, or supporting the attack. It underscored the exacerbation of coastal communities' suffering and the threat to livelihood security due to the destruction of fishing boats.
The Authority called for justice for the victims' families and compensation for the losses incurred. They urged the United Nations, the Human Rights Council, and other human rights organizations to condemn the massacre, establish an independent international commission to investigate, and hold those responsible accountable. The Authority also called for efforts to cease the aggression, blockade, and attacks targeting civilians and their livelihoods.
