Meeting in Sana’a Explores Private Sector Role in Overcoming Electricity Crisis

Sana'a: A meeting was held in Sana'a today, chaired by Deputy Minister of Electricity, Energy and Water Adel Bader, alongside Deputy Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry in the capital secretariat, Mohammed Salah, to explore partnership opportunities between the Ministry and the private sector in providing electricity. This initiative is in response to the ongoing crisis due to damage inflicted on power generation stations by the Israeli enemy.

According to Yemen News Agency, the meeting, which included participation from Deputy Minister for the Electricity Sector Engineer Ahmed al-Mutawakkil, General Investment Authority official Engineer Mohammed al-Farzuai, and Chairman of the Public Corporation for Electrical Industries Abdulghani al-Madani, focused on how the private sector could capitalize on investment opportunities within the electricity sector. Discussions centered around the potential of renewable energy to provide a sustainable and environmentally friendly power supply to meet the continuous demand across various governorates. The meeting also addressed preparations for the upcoming Fourth Energy Conference and Exhibition, which aims to highlight renewable energy investment opportunities.

Deputy Minister Bader emphasized the Ministry's commitment to collaborating with the private sector, identifying it as a crucial partner in the country's comprehensive development, particularly in the domains of electricity and water. He highlighted the impact of repeated attacks by the Israeli enemy, which have incapacitated several power plants, underscoring the need for enhanced private-sector support to tackle the current challenges.

Bader further stressed the significance of private sector involvement in the emergency plan, which focuses on renewable energy projects to ensure adequate power supply. He expressed confidence in the private sector's role in achieving sustainable development goals, asserting that there are tangible investment opportunities for the public good. He also acknowledged the private sector's support for renewable energy conferences and exhibitions as essential platforms for showcasing energy products and exploring new opportunities.

Deputy Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry reaffirmed the private sector's integral role in driving the national economy and supporting comprehensive development, including in the electricity sector. He pledged private sector backing for the Fourth Renewable Energy Conference and lauded the Ministry's efforts to foster cooperation and establish a genuine partnership with the Chamber and business leaders.

Investment Authority Deputy al-Farzuai highlighted the critical nature of investing in electricity, stating that Yemen requires more than 4,000 MW of power to satisfy the actual demand for industrial, commercial, and consumer growth. He described electricity as vital for development, noting that there are 12 investment opportunities in the electricity sector with a combined generation capacity of up to 1,000 MW.

Deputy Minister for the Electricity Sector Engineer al-Mutawakkil reiterated the importance of private-sector involvement in preparing for the upcoming Fourth Renewable Energy Conference.

Abdulghani al-Madani, Chairman of the General Authority for Electrical Industries, detailed the authority's projects in electrical industries and renewable energy. He emphasized the necessity of thorough preparation for the forthcoming conference by building on the outcomes of previous events.

The meeting concluded with several recommendations, including the creation of a preparatory committee responsible for drafting the exhibition's plan, designing the conference's logo and themes, and presenting them to the supervisory committee in the next session.
