Taiz:The National Human Rights Commission has condemned the Saudi aggression's attack on Sunday on a maternity and childhood hospital in Al-Shamayatayn district of Taiz governorate.
According to Yemen News Agency, the Commission declared this incident as yet another war crime, accusing the Saudi-led aggressor's air forces of launching a direct and deliberate attack on the hospital. The attack resulted in the destruction of major sections of the facility, including the neonatal unit, maternity ward, and emergency department, rendering the hospital completely inoperable at a time when it was crowded with pregnant women, infants, and newborns.
The Commission emphasized that targeting a medical facility, especially one dedicated to maternity and childhood care, is a violation of international humanitarian law. It cited Article 18 of the Fourth Geneva Convention and Article 12 of Additional Protocol I, which prohibit attacks on hospitals and medical units, labeling the strike as a premeditated criminal act and a full-fledged war crime.
The statement questioned the intentions behind targeting vulnerable individuals such as infants and pregnant women, criticizing the military tactics employed by the aggressors. The Commission also held the Saudi regime, and its supporters, including the US and British administrations, fully responsible for the attack.
Expressing frustration over the international community's silence, the Commission called out the United Nations, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, the World Health Organization, and UNICEF for their inaction. It accused them of complicity in the crime due to their continued silence, urging them to take a stand.
The Commission concluded by affirming Yemen's right to pursue legal action against the leaders of the aggression, stating these crimes would not be subject to a statute of limitations.
