General

Dhamar: The Public Works Office in Dhamar Governorate inaugurated a project to supply, install, and operate a solar-powered street lighting system for key roads in Dhamar city.

According to Yemen News Agency, the project involves the installation of 450 solar-powered lights along the main and western ring roads. With funding amounting to $300,000 USD, the project is financed by the World Bank through the UN Office for Project Services (UNOPS) under the Emergency Integrated Urban Services Project in Yemen - Phase II. The technology employed in this project is a hybrid lighting system featuring dual power sources (AC/DC), integrated solar panels, batteries, and smart control units.

Eng. Moath Al-Shawkani, Director of Dhamar's Public Works Office, expressed appreciation towards UNOPS for its contribution in enhancing public lighting using renewable energy. He noted that this initiative is expected to reduce accidents and improve traffic flow, especially in the context of Yemen's ongoing electricity challenges.

Eng. Mohammed Reda, Deputy Director of the project, detailed that Phase 1 includes the main road from Customs Circle to Kamaran Circle and the western ring road, covering areas such as Stadium, Al-Muthalath, Al-Azraq Station, and Amran Circles. He also mentioned that future phases are planned to expand the coverage area of the lighting system.

Eng. Anas Omran, Roads Director, emphasized the benefits of the new lighting system, highlighting its high brightness, low energy consumption, long lifespan, and reliability even under adverse weather conditions like rain and cloudy skies.
