Speaker of Yemeni House Denounces UN Security Council’s Stance on Saudi Arabia

Sanaa:Yemen The Speaker of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Yemen, Sheikh Yahya Ali Al-Rai, has sent a letter to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, expressing strong dissatisfaction with the Security Council's statement issued on October 9, 2026. He described the statement as biased in favor of the Saudi regime.

According to Yemen News Agency, the letter challenges the claims made by UN envoy Hans Grundberg about threats to commercial ships in the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandab Strait, asserting that navigation is safe except for ships linked to the Saudi coalition. Yemen has imposed a ban on these ships as part of a "siege with siege" response to the restrictions imposed by Saudi Arabia since March 2015.

The letter holds the United Nations and the Security Council accountable for failing to fulfill their humanitarian duties over the past 12 years of conflict, which has resulted in significant civilian casualties. Statistics from Yemen's Ministry of Public Health indicate over 60,000 civilian deaths and injuries, with more than 1.4 million deaths due to the siege's repercussions, including disease and lack of medical care.

Sheikh Yahya Ali Al-Rai also emphasized Yemen's efforts to pursue peace and criticized the Saudi regime's military escalation, including an attack on Sanaa International Airport on July 13, 2026. He called on the UN and Security Council to reconsider their positions and address the double standards affecting international peace and security.
