Khartoum: The humanitarian situation in Sudan is worsening as cholera cases surge and flooding wreaks havoc on communities. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reports a significant increase in cholera cases, with over 1,300 confirmed in the locality of Tawila, North Darfur State, within just one week.
According to United Nations, local and international partners have established cholera treatment centers, but these efforts are insufficient to manage the escalating health crisis. Tawila, which hosts several hundred thousand displaced individuals, faces growing challenges as the upcoming rainy season threatens to exacerbate the situation. The lack of essential services and the presence of explosive remnants of war further complicate the return of displaced people to their communities.
Across Sudan, the returnees confront serious difficulties. In White Nile State, those coming back after a year of displacement urgently require health, water, sanitation, and hygiene support. Similarly, in eastern Sudan's Kassala State, heavy rains have destroyed homes, forcing families to cope with dire conditions. OCHA highlights the insecurity impeding humanitarian efforts, which often results in families returning to displacement sites, undermining sustainable return initiatives. The agency calls for increased international support to address the mounting needs across Sudan.
In Ukraine, recent attacks have resulted in the deaths of over 20 civilians and injured more than 100 others, including children. The strikes have targeted the capital Kyiv and other regions, causing significant damage to homes, schools, and a health facility. The Ivano-Frankivsk region, previously less affected by hostilities, has suffered its largest attack since the full-scale Russian invasion in February 2022.
Frontline regions such as Donetsk, Dnipro, and Kherson have also reported civilian casualties and damage to infrastructure. Humanitarian organizations, in coordination with local authorities and UN agencies, continue to provide essential support, including shelter materials, legal aid, and psychosocial assistance, to affected communities across Ukraine.
