Agriculture & Fisheries Ministry Announces Closure of Shrimp Fishing Season in Red Sea

General

Sana'a: The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Water Resources announced the closure of the coastal shrimp fishing season in the Red Sea within the territorial waters of the Republic of Yemen. This closure, effective from 24 Rabi' al-Awwal 1447 AH, corresponding to 16 September 2025, will remain in place until further notice.

According to Yemen News Agency, the Ministry issued a directive to the General Authority for Fisheries in the Red Sea, mandating an inventory of the quantities of coastal shrimp stored in freezers by exporters. Exporters are required to submit their findings to the Ministry for review.

The Ministry emphasized that legal penalties will be enforced on individuals who violate this decision. These actions are in line with the Law on the Regulation of Fishing and Exploitation of Marine Life and its Executive Regulations, aiming to safeguard shrimp stocks from depletion.

Additionally, the Ministry has advised fishermen to adjust their fishing nets to ensure the mesh size measures 38 mm. This is part of the efforts to promote sustainable fishing practices.

The General Authority for Fisheries in the Red Sea, along with the Coast Guard, has been assigned the responsibility of enhancing maritime monitoring throughout the closure period.
