Al-Bashiri Initiates Bread Price and Weight Monitoring Campaign in Capital Municipality

Sanaa:The Acting Minister of Economy, Industry and Investment, Sam Al-Bashiri, has launched field campaigns to monitor bread prices and weights in bakeries, ovens, and sales outlets across the capital municipality and the governorates. This initiative aims to verify compliance with the approved flour extraction rate of 86 percent.

According to Yemen News Agency, these campaigns are part of the ministry's efforts to protect consumers, enhance market stability, and ensure the availability of basic commodities. The initiative aligns with the government's strategy to strengthen livelihood protection and food security amid ongoing economic challenges and the repercussions of the Saudi aggression and siege.

Al-Bashiri emphasized the Ministry of Economy's commitment to implementing economic decisions through field measures that directly impact price stability and compliance with approved weights. He stated that the ministry's field teams, in coordination with the Yemeni Authority for Standardization, Metrology and Quality Control, will verify adherence to the official pricing, which sets a kilogram of bread at 450 rials in traditional bakeries and 400 rials in automated bakeries, while ensuring that a single loaf weighs no less than 45 grams.

The campaigns are designed to cover targeted districts in the capital municipality and governorates, aiming to strengthen price discipline and prevent tampering with weights. Al-Bashiri affirmed that protecting citizens' access to basic staple food at specified prices and weights is a priority for the ministry.

Legal measures will be taken against those who violate pricing and weight regulations, adhering to legal controls that protect both consumers and facility owners. Al-Bashiri highlighted the role of the private sector, particularly milling companies, bakeries, and ovens, in maintaining the supply of basic food commodities and productive activity, expressing confidence in their cooperation with approved pricing and weights.

Abdullah Al-Atfi, Executive Director of the Yemeni Authority for Standardization, Metrology and Quality Control, assured that technical teams will verify the safety and accuracy of bakery scales and examine flour samples to ensure compliance with standard specifications and the extraction rate.

The Ministry of Economy has urged citizens to contribute to community oversight by reporting bread price and weight violations via a toll-free number. This campaign follows previous measures, including studying bread production costs and implementing a pricing strategy aimed at balancing consumer rights and productive activity needs.

The campaign also coincides with the second phase of the decision to raise the wheat flour extraction rate to 86 percent, initiated in October, as part of efforts to enhance wheat utilization, improve flour nutritional value, and support national food security.
