Sana'a: Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Jamal Amer met with Armen Yadjarian, Acting Resident Representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Sana'a, and Huijing Yu, Acting Resident Representative of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Sana'a. During the meeting, Minister Amer voiced concerns regarding the UNHCR and IOM offices' inability to meet their obligations toward refugees, migrants, and displaced persons, especially in terms of healthcare and basic services provision.
According to Yemen News Agency, Minister Amer urged the acting representatives of UNHCR and IOM to uphold their humanitarian responsibilities. He emphasized the additional burdens faced by government agencies and society due to the influx of migrants and asylum seekers, amidst ongoing military aggression and a comprehensive blockade. Amer highlighted that Yemen continues to endure the repercussions of a severe humanitarian crisis.
The Foreign Minister further pointed out incidents involving Saudi border guards targeting large numbers of migrants with gunfire. He criticized the International Organization for Migration (IOM) for not fulfilling its humanitarian duty to treat the injured, thereby exacerbating the Yemeni government's burden.
In response, Yadjarian and Huijing Yu explained that the suspension of many activities is primarily due to halted funding and insufficient budgets for projects. They stressed that the majority of their activities are life-saving and noted ongoing efforts with donors to secure funding for humanitarian projects aimed at assisting refugees and migrants.
