Sana'a:The National Commission for Human Rights has issued a strong condemnation against the Saudi regime for utilizing Al-Rayan International Airport in Hadhramaut Governorate as a military-logistical base. The airport, originally intended for civilian use, is being used to transport lethal military equipment, which the Commission claims are directed against the Yemeni population and their national assets.
According to Yemen News Agency, the Commission highlighted that Al-Rayan Airport has been turned from a civilian facility meant for travelers, patients, and students into a conduit for military aggression. The weapons transported through the airport, including missiles and drones, are reportedly being used to target civilians in various Yemeni regions, including Sana'a and Sa'ada. The Commission argues that this use of a civilian airport by a foreign state constitutes a breach of Article 2(4) of the United Nations Charter, amounting to a violation of state sovereignty.
The statement from the Commission labels this transformation of a civilian airport into a military target as a war crime, stripping the facility of its legal protections under international law. Individuals responsible for this conversion are said to hold criminal responsibility. The Commission notes that over 5,530 victims have been documented in Sa'ada province alone during a recent de-escalation period, with significant civilian casualties.
The Commission also expressed concern that the closure of the airport to civilians deprives many of essential services, describing this as a form of collective punishment. They call on international organizations, including the International Committee of the Red Cross and the International Civil Aviation Organization, to condemn these actions, asserting they threaten international civil aviation security.
The Commission announced plans to include these actions in a comprehensive report for international courts, urging all parties involved to cease their activities or face legal consequences. The transformation of Rayan Airport is characterized as a hostile and terrorist act, revealing what the Commission describes as the true nature of the aggression against Yemen.
