Sana'a: The Committee for Rights, Public Freedoms, and Civil Society at the Shura Council, led by Speaker Mohammed Hussein Al-Aydarous, convened to discuss the current state of correctional facilities and the associated human rights issues faced by inmates.
According to Yemen News Agency, the Speaker commended the directives from Sayyed Abdulmalik Badr al-Din al-Houthi to release prisoners across various governorates ahead of Ramadan. The swift execution of these directives by relevant authorities was acknowledged, emphasizing the humanitarian duty of prisoner care and rehabilitation. Al-Aydarous highlighted the need for ongoing cooperation among legislative authorities, executive bodies, and civil society organizations to advance in this humanitarian endeavor.
The meeting, attended by Committee Chairwoman Haseebah Shanif, Deputy Head Darham Al-Zaakri, Rapporteur Dr. Nabil Al-Hammadi, and other stakeholders, included a briefing on conditions within the Rehabilitation Correctional Facility in the Capital Secretariat. The briefing focused on the living and rehabilitation conditions of both male and female prisoners and efforts to improve the correctional environment according to legal and humanitarian standards.
Participants underlined the urgency of implementing legal and charitable measures to facilitate inmate release and reduce their hardships, aligning with the state's objectives in supporting this demographic. Discussions also addressed the post-release challenges faced by female prisoners, particularly their psychological and social reintegration difficulties.
The meeting concluded with a call to establish a shelter for released female prisoners who lack support or face societal rejection. Plans for the shelter's operation and administration were proposed to ensure necessary protection, care, and vocational training to aid their dignified livelihood.
