Sana'a: Al-Ahli Sana'a began its campaign to defend its league title in the best possible way, securing a valuable win over its traditional rival Wehda Sana'a at the Al-Tarafi Stadium, in the opening round of the competition, amid a massive crowd that filled the stands.
According to Yemen News Agency, with this important victory, Al-Ahli collected its first three points, reaffirming its slogan 'No surrender of the throne,' in a night where the red identity and sense of belonging shone brightly.
The opening of the first half was marked by caution and physical intensity, a familiar feature of derby clashes, as both teams exchanged possession while trying to close spaces and secure their defensive lines. The first half ended in a goalless draw, reflecting the tactical balance on the pitch and setting the stage for a decisive second half.
Midway through the second half, the red stands erupted in celebration when Zakaria Taftof broke the deadlock, beating goalkeeper Osama Makref after converting a precise cross from Jalal Al-Jalal, which was intelligently set up by the promising Khalid Al-Shaiba, allowing Taftof to fire a powerful shot into the Wehda net.
To preserve the lead, Al-Ahli's coach made tactical substitutions to control the tempo and prevent Wehda's attempts to equalize. Thanks to the alertness of Al-Suwadi, the experience of Al-Jama'i, and the solidity of Al-Siyagi, Al-Ahli's defense withstood the late pressure. International referee Basaleh eventually blew the final whistle, confirming the 'Emperor's' victory and the sweetness of the three points.
In Hadramout, Al-Mukalla secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Al-Yarmouk, concluding the first round of the league that kicked off on Thursday. Al-Orouba defeated Ibb Union 2-1, while Al-Sadd Marib beat Salama Al-Ghurfa 1-0, and Tadamon Hadramout overcame Fahman Abyan 2-1.
