Hodeidah: The Executive Center for Mine Action carried out an operation today to destroy large quantities of war remnants-including landmines, cluster munitions, and other explosives-north of the Kilo 16 area in Hodeidah city. The operation was supported by the International Committee of the Red Cross and held under the slogan ‘Safe Land.’
According to Yemen News Agency, Hodeidah’s Deputy Governor for Services Affairs, Mohammed Halisy, stated that these efforts are part of ongoing humanitarian work to secure affected areas and facilitate the safe return of residents to their homes and farms. He praised the Center’s role in protecting lives and property and easing the suffering caused by remnants of the war.
The Center’s Executive Director, Brig. Gen. Ali Safra, reported that the operation involved three consecutive detonations, destroying 200 anti-personnel mines and 90 anti-vehicle mines. These devices had been cleared from the areas of Al-Zaafran, Upper Al-Sharaf, Lower Al-Sharaf, and Al-Masna in Al-Durayhimi district.
He confirmed that clearance operations are ongoing across affected districts as part of the Center’s plan to secure contaminated areas. The work is being carried out by specialized engineering teams in coordination with humanitarian partners.
Col. Yahya Sabr, the Center’s branch director in the governorate, explained that the destruction operation followed extensive field survey and collection efforts. He stressed that teams continue working despite challenges and limited resources to protect civilians.
He added that this operation follows earlier efforts in mid-October, during which 250 anti-vehicle mines and 50 anti-personnel mines were destroyed in the Manzar area, also in coordination with the Red Cross. He reaffirmed the continuation of clearance operations to secure communities and support the return of residents.
Several specialists and technicians from the Executive Center for Mine Action attended the destruction operation.
