Olive Harvest in West Bank Marred by Escalating Attacks

Nablus:The olive harvest season, traditionally a time of joy for Palestinians, has turned into a period of unrest and conflict in the West Bank and occupied Al-Quda. Since October 7, 2023, attacks against Palestinian olive farmers have intensified, with settlers and Zionist forces targeting trees, property, and individuals in an effort to disrupt the Palestinian connection to their land and livelihood.

According to Yemen News Agency, the Palestinian Commission Against the Wall and Settlements reported 2,051 attacks in September alone, with 1,404 carried out by the occupation army and 647 by settlers. This violence includes arson, land-leveling, theft, and physical assaults, with thousands of trees damaged or destroyed.

The olive sector, a crucial part of the Palestinian economy, has suffered significantly, with 14,000 trees affected in September, including over 9,000 olive trees. From October 2023 to September 2026, attacks resulted in the destruction of 147,111 trees, with olive trees being a prime target. The financial losses are substantial, with damages estimated at approximately $153.8 million.

In recent days, incidents in Nablus and other areas have highlighted the ongoing challenges faced by farmers. Settlers have attacked farmers, stolen harvests, and even fired live ammunition. Military forces have also detained individuals assisting with the harvest, further exacerbating tensions.

The violence is not just economic but also affects the lives of individuals, as evidenced by the recent death of a farmer in Salfit following a settler attack. The targeting of olive trees, a symbol of Palestinian identity and resistance, underscores a broader strategy to undermine Palestinian presence and push for land confiscation.

Experts like Raed Muqadi point out that these attacks are part of a systematic policy aimed at displacing Palestinians from their lands. The olive harvest season is particularly targeted due to the increased presence of farmers on lands threatened by confiscation. The destruction of olive trees, which are integral to Palestinian culture and economy, represents an attempt to erode the resilience and will of the Palestinian people.
