Shura Council Condemns UNSC’s Decision to Extend Sanctions Against Yemen

General

Sana'a: The Shura Council on Monday strongly condemned the UN Security Council's decision to extend sanctions against Yemen.

According to Yemen News Agency, the Shura Council described the decision as unjust, lacking fairness and objectivity, and reflecting a clear bias towards the aggressor states that have been waging a comprehensive military and economic war against the Yemeni people for more than ten years. The Council affirmed that the Security Council's decision ignored the catastrophic humanitarian situation in Yemen and aligned itself with the interests of the aggression coalition led by the US, Britain, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE. It proved beyond any doubt that the Security Council has transformed from a body tasked with maintaining international peace and security into a tool that provides political cover for the ongoing violations against Yemen, its land, and its people.

Maintaining and continuing the sanctions without a genuine review of the situation on the ground and without determining the responsibilities of the parties involved in the aggression and blockade constitutes a serious violation of the UN Charter and the principles of international law, and demonstrates the Security Council's double standards in dealing with the aggression against Yemen.

The statement explained that the resolution directly serves the aggressor states and contributes to tightening the economic and political noose around Sana'a, crippling the Yemeni state's ability to fulfill its obligations towards its citizens, at a time when the UN is ignoring the effects of the aggression, which has destroyed infrastructure and led to the greatest humanitarian catastrophe for the Yemeni people.

The statement also affirmed the Council's categorical rejection of the extension resolution, considering it an undermining of a comprehensive and just peace in Yemen and a prolongation of the aggression against Yemen. It held the aggressor and blockading states directly responsible for the deteriorating humanitarian situation as a result of their imposition of a suffocating blockade on food, medicine, and fuel.

The statement emphasized that the Republic of Yemen is facing an external war and organized aggression, and that portraying the situation as a conflict between internal parties is political deception aimed at evading accountability for the aggressor states' grave crimes and violations against the Yemeni people.

The Council called on the international community to conduct a comprehensive and objective reassessment of the sanctions regime, to refrain from succumbing to the political pressure exerted by the aggressor states on United Nations institutions, and to end the aggression, lift the blockade, and fully and unconditionally open humanitarian corridors.

The Shura Council reiterated Yemen's unwavering support for the Palestinian people and their just cause, stating that punishing Yemen for its humanitarian and religious stances regarding Gaza constitutes a disregard for international justice. It stressed that the Yemeni people will not submit to policies of collective punishment and double standards, and will continue to defend their sovereignty and legitimate rights through all legal, political, and diplomatic means.
