Hodeida Launches First Phase of Fish Landing Centers Rehabilitation Project

General

Sana'a: Authorities in Hodeida governorate have launched the handover of the first phase of a project to rehabilitate and upgrade fish landing centers, aimed at improving fisheries management and services for fishermen. The first phase includes the delivery of eight prefabricated office units equipped with administrative and office facilities to serve as government service centers at fish landing sites.

According to Yemen News Agency, the centers will support fish catch data collection, regulate fishing activities, strengthen oversight of the fisheries sector, maintain the quality of fish products, and provide direct services to fishermen. The project, financed by the Agricultural and Fisheries Projects and Initiatives Financing Unit and supervised by the General Authority for Red Sea Fisheries, has a reported cost of 93 million Yemeni rials.

It aims to establish 14 government centers responsible for issuing licenses for fishermen and fishing boats, marine voyage permits, and transport permits for fish marketing vehicles, while improving the regulation of marine resources. At the launch ceremony, Hodeida undersecretary Ahmed al-Bishri said the project reflects efforts to improve service infrastructure in the fisheries sector and enhance the performance of fish landing centers to better meet fishermen's needs. He added that the governorate considers fisheries a key economic sector supporting thousands of families.

Officials from the fisheries authority said the new centers are expected to improve the organization of fish landings, licensing procedures, inspections, and statistical monitoring, while helping preserve fish quality from landing sites through marketing. Yahya al-Wadai, director of the Agricultural and Fisheries Projects and Initiatives Financing Unit in Hodeidah, said the project forms part of broader efforts to finance infrastructure and development projects that support the fisheries and agriculture sectors and promote local economic development.
